Donald Trump and Affordable Care Act


As Donald Trump moves closer to becoming the Republican’s presidential candidate in the general election, there are new ramblings of what he would do to Obamacare if elected. Many arguments have been made against the continuance of this growing governmental entity, but odds are the ACA has already “left the station”, never to be diminished or ended. The last battles are likely to be held in state legislatures where expansion of Medicaid and State sponsored exchanges are still in flux. A particularly interesting outcome will be the Commonwealth of Kentucky where a recently elected Republican governor has vowed to dismantle and discontinue a well-entrenched statewide exchange that had been operating for years.


If history is to be repeated, the Affordable Care Act is here to stay, and massive changes to its structure are very doubtful. Let’s take a quick look at what was said in the 60’s when Medicare, a similarly tagged national health plan was proposed.


Ronald Reagan: “[I]f you don’t [stop Medicare] and I don’t do it, one of these days you and I are going to spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it once was like in America when men were free.” [1961]

George H.W. Bush: Described Medicare in 1964 as “socialized medicine.” [1964]

Barry Goldwater: “Having given our pensioners their medical care in kind, why not food baskets, why not public housing accommodations, why not vacation resorts, why not a ration of cigarettes for those who smoke and of beer for those who drink.” [1964]

Bob Dole: In 1996, while running for the Presidency, Dole openly bragged that he was one of 12 House members who voted against creating Medicare in 1965. “I was there, fighting the fight, voting against Medicare . . . because we knew it wouldn’t work in 1965.” [1965]


If these arguments sound familiar, so will the likely outcome of the more recent protests against the ACA. In a period when both major parties are struggling to figure out who their constituencies really are, odds are the Affordable Care Act will just keep lumbering along.


Good news for those seeing increased healthcare dollars expanding their business, but not necessarily for those desiring less government intervention.

Healthcare staffing industry professionals: Do you take your health seriously?

doctor medical malpracticeWhen you think of the word "health", think about what that word means. Eating right? Excercising? The medical definition from the Merriam-Webster Dictionary is as follows:

"The condition of an organism or one of its parts in which it performs its vital functions normally or properly : the state of being sound in body or mind; especially : freedom from physical disease and pain"

"Freedom from physical disease and pain" is the key point in that. What if you go throughout your day, week, or your life really and you don't feel any physical pain does this mean you are healthy? Not necessarily. Sometimes, your body may be experiencing a health issue but it doesn't cause you any pain until it is too late.

Get Serious About Your Health

Eating right and excercise are key components of a healthy lifestyle, yes, but also educating yourself to take proper precautions is also important. As you know, the brain is like the control center of your body. Your brain tells every part of your body how and when to do their job to keep you functioning. The brain is also connected to your spine/spinal cord which serves not only as a pathway for impulses for nerves but also as a center for carrying out reflex actions. Since the nervous system relies on the spinal cord to determine what impulse(s) to send next it is vital to keep your spine in its most optimum condition.

If the spine is not in the correct alignment, then nerves can be pinched, stressed, or have pressure on them preventing them from sending correct information, or sending it slower than it should. A person may not be able to physically feel the tension that is in place until it is too late, when the nerve is being completley cut off.

It is important to keep yourself healthy and with the spine as the main control center for all of your nerves and functionality of your body, where do you think it might be best to start with your health? Of course, your spine! A chiropractor can take the appropriate x-rays and thermal scans that will help keep your spine in alignment to aleviate tension that may be on certain nerves.

Get Smart, Get Healthy

Of course, visiting a chiropractor will help but it may not be a solution to your problem. It will all depend on the person and how much damage is being done. However, it is probably one of the best places to start in keeping yourself healthy.

When something is wrong our bodies, usually the first thought is to visit the family doctor. However, how often do you visit a doctor and your in the office for 5 minutes, sent off with a prescription (that the doctor may be unsure if it really will work), and then told to come back if you're still feeling ill after a certain period of time for them to either try something else or refer you to a specialist? It can be frustrating paying for numerous doctor bills and for a specialist when you could've had treatment sooner rather than later had you not had to jump through hoops to find out what was really wrong.

Leading Causes: Can You Guess The Leading Causes of Death?

If someone were to ask you what the leading cause of death in the United States was, what would you guess? Cancer? Heart Disease? Obesity? While all of those are good guesses, one of the leading causes of death in the United States is Iatrogenic causes, aka malpractice. Not only is it bad enough to have nurses stealing drugs, but to have our doctors and physicians not doing their jobs properly.

Iatrogenic causes may be something new to some, and if it is new don't be surprised. We live in a country that has wonderful doctors and access to wonderful technology that is changing the game in healthcare. Why would you think that malpractice could be a leading cause? Having access to the "best-of-the-best" doctors and machines is a wonderful opportunity but what good does it serve if the job is not being handled correctly.

Where does healthcare staffing come in to play?

It is important as healthcare staffing providers that we stay on top of our "staffing game" to ensure that hospitals and clinics have the best nurses, doctors, physicians and caregivers are entering the facilities ready to do their job at the highest and best level. Credentialing and verifying information is vital in doing so. Keeping up with the credentials and verifying is even more important.

Take control

Staying healthy is a team effort, with yourself and your caregivers, but starts individually. Educate yourself on your health and healthcare options. Be sure to eat right and excercise. You can't put a price on being healthy.

Potential hazards of 1099's in healthcare staffing?

1099 Magnifying Glasslg2Utilizing independent contractors can sometimes be a difficult and confusing task to take on.  They are used not only in the healthcare staffing industry, but in almost every industry out there.  Its important for companies to have some general knowledge on independent contractors, as misclassifying employees and independent contractors can result in potentially serious consequences. 

First, its important to know what an independent contractor actually is, as opposed to a regular employee.  According to the IRS, someone is generally an independent contractor if the payer has the right to control or direct only the result of the work, and not what will be done or how it will be done.  Independent contractors usually set their own hours and are paid on a freelance basis, either a flat rate or per job.  They conduct their work in a manner that is independent from the company that is paying them for the work.  Therefore, its important to note that independent contractors are not entitled to benefits that are afforded to employees such as retirement funds, 401ks and health insurance.  Independent contractors can, however, deduct certain health insurance premium costs when they file taxes. 

They are also different from regular employees as far as filing taxes are concerned.  Independent contractors dont have income taxes withheld from their earnings.  It is their responsibility to pay any taxes on their earnings, and not the companys.  Therefore, different measures must be taken when dealing with taxation procedures.  The two most common IRS forms associated with independent contractors are the W-9 and the 1099-MISC.  The W-9 (The W-4 is used for an actual employee) is a form that an independent contractor must fill out upon his/her agreement to work for a particular company.  The 1099-MISC is a form that the company must fill out and submit to the IRS for the independent contractor if compensation for their work exceeds $600.  These different tax procedures are an important reason why companies must be vigilant about properly classifying independent contractors and employees.  A company misclassifying an employee as an independent contractor can result in substantial tax issues and penalties for failure to pay employment taxes and filing required tax forms.

Its important for everyone in our industry to have some proper general knowledge about independent contractors.  All parties involved must be aware of the nature of the agreement being set forth and the work that is to be done to ensure that individuals are being properly classified so that companies will not be subject to penalties set forth by the IRS.

Is your Doctor iRoboting

RP VITA 1Working in Brookstone through college I was very knowledgeable on the latest and greatest gadgets this world had to offer. One of those, ahead-of-its-time, gadgets that was sold in Brookstone over ten years ago and is just now mainstream was the Roomba from iRobot.  As a store manager, I thoroughly enjoyed the Roomba because we had a vacuum cleaner constantly sweeping the store so it kept our nightly chores down to a minimum. Now we all know the commercials... “Roomba Roomba” or ‘I’ve Robot have you.”  So when I heard the announcement today about the iRobot doctors, also know as the Remote Presence Virtual + Independent Telemedicine Assistant or RP VITA were rolling out in seven hospitals, my healthcare ears and my Brookstone ears perked up at the same time! 

Robotic assisted surgery may not be a new concept but it has been something of a more costly measure in the past, which is the reason why I find the iRobot brand and healthcare an attractive partnership. iRobot has had a history of making robotic technology more affordable to the general public and hopefully, with the cost of healthcare rapidly growing,  they can pass along the same type of cost savings to the hospitals that they have in the commercial side of their business.

Very little information has being released about the RP VITA Robot, which obtained FDA approval last month but is really nothing more than a tablet with built in video that will allow doctors and patients to interact. Doctors love it because it is easy to use and it is being billed as the first robot that won’t disrupt the hospital. The cost to the hospital is between $4000-$6000 per month which includes everything needed to run the robot.

What do you think about this technology? Are you comfortable with your doctor on an RP VITA or are you just getting used to the idea of a Roomba?  Next time you are at the hospital you may be iRoboting with your doctor.

How Medical Staffing Agencies should prepare their staff for tragedies similar to Boston Marathon bombings?

boston marathon first respondersLike many of you, due to the terror attack at the Boston Marathon, I was glued to the news for most of last week watching as the horror unfolded. On Friday night I sat watching CNN like it was a movie, as they captured Suspect #2. Although, I am deeply saddened and horrified by what happened, I am equally proud and in awe of the first responders and medical personnel in Boston. It is pretty amazing that only three people died that day and that we lost no more lives once they made it to the hospital. 

Our country has become more prepared over the last decade to deal with disaster response.  A new way of thinking to disaster response has emerged because hard lessons we have learned starting with the wake-up call of the Columbine shootings in 1999 to the latest Aurora movie theatre attack in 2012. The New Yorker had an excellent blog posted, “Why Boston’s Hospitals were Ready.”  It’s a fascinating article to read how the emergency teams were able to coordinate and the staff was able to respond quickly to those injured in the bombings. 

Over the last week many healthcare providers and first responders have asked themselves how would they handle a similar situation in their own city.  My question to healthcare staffing agencies, what could you have done to prepare your staff, as a medical staffing agency; in an event it was your city under attack.

Since a medical staffing agency doesn’t have a direct role in staffing a healthcare facility, in the event of mass casualties, there are many indirect ways a staffing agency can be prepared.  Here are a few ideas.

First, offer your providers an incentive to become a volunteer with the American Red Cross Disaster response team or volunteer with other community organizations who need medical personnel.

Medical staffing agencies can even become involved in corporate volunteer programs.  Since many have trained clinicians on their internal staff as well as healthcare providers, the Red Cross can use the unique skills to take part of their Ready When the Time Comes program. 

Secondly, have a database of caregivers who are clearly marked with the disaster training certification that can be contacted and activated quickly in the event of mass casualties.

Then, partner with your local facility and have a plan to staff them accordingly if a disaster occurs. Using SMS and mobile technology, medical staffing agencies can quickly get the word out to a larger pool of nurses than a typical facility can.

Lastly, coordinate a Blood Drive in your area to help refill the blood supply in your community after a major disaster.

Medical staffing agencies have a unique position in this country and the community. If medical staffing agencies use to their resources to their fullest potential they can activate their company and step in when the facility needs relief.
