Don’t Break the Texting Etiquette Rules of Healthcare Staffing

Every day American’s send over 5 million text messages.  People can’t put their phones down.  The statistics are staggering - 97% of all text messages are opened.  This easily explains why SMS technology is the fastest growing recruiting tool among healthcare staffing recruiters.

Last month we did a seminar and a blog on text messaging.  We talked about how to use text messaging, the advantages and disadvantages of text messaging and why it is important part of your healthcare staffing methods.  But there are rules you need to abide before you start a texting extravaganza.  

1.    Get Permission

If you plan on using an automated texting messaging service, like the one we use in BlueSky, please get consent before using the automated service.  The biggest complaint consumers make when filing a lawsuit is they have been sent an unwanted text.  The Telephone Consumer Protection Act prohibits companies from using an automated dialing service without getting a person’s consent first and if this rule is violated the plaintiff can be awarded up to a $1500 per violation.  Getting permission is a very simple thing to do and can be included as part of your application process.  If you are unsure of how to do this please ask your provider how to get people to “Opt-In” for mass texting.

2.     Identify yourself in Every Text

Many times mass text messages are from an unfamiliar number.  Not only is this one of the legal requirements when sending a bulk text message but it is also just a courteous thing to do.

3.     Be Respectful

Time your SMSs very carefully.  I know this should be common sense but it is very important especially when working in the healthcare staffing industry.  We have healthcare professionals that many times have worked a night shift and no one likes to get a text message while they are sleeping.  Please think about your candidate's routines before sending out a text message.  This will keep your providers happy and will also allow for the best response to your text message

Ultimately, make sure all of your staffers are well versed in the rules of texting because texting falls under the same under the rules and regulations as the CAN-SPAM Act so it is important follow the FCC Guidelines.  Otherwise you could end up with a massive lawsuit like the $250 million class action lawsuit Papa John’s is facing.
