healthcare staffing and internet explorerTuesday morning, Microsoft warned Internet Explorer users that hackers have found a "massive hole" or vulnerability in the web browser and to download security software to mitigate the risk of infection. More than a third of all web browsing is done through Internet Explorer versions 6-9, so obviously this is a huge concern to BlueSky users and others who use a web-based healthcare staffing software.

Here are three quick things you need to know about the handle the security risk within your healthcare staffing agency.

What does the Microsoft vulnerability do?

This hole has been used to deliver the "Poison Ivy" Trojan which could corrupt the memory and allow hackers to send malicious code to your PC.  Many times a hacker will try and get users to an infected website at which point they can take control of your computer.

What is Microsoft Doing to fix the Problem?

There is no immediate fix to the problem, Microsoft has announced that they are working as quick as possible to patch all versions of Internet Explorer affected.  Therefore, if you are a die-hard Internet Explorer user or your healthcare staffing software is not compatible with any other browser, then you must download a free security tool called 'Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit', available on Microsoft’s website.

How will this affect your Healthcare Staffing Agency?

Although there have been only a small number or reported attacks, many security experts recommend not to use Internet Explorer until there is a patch. Remember staffing agencies hold many files, like Direct Deposit info, Social Security numbers and ultimately have a fiduciary responsibility to keep providers data safe.

If you do not have another browser on your system there are several to choose from and they are all FREE, just be sure to check with your staffing software to make sure you are using compatible browser. BlueSky users have no need to worry, we are compatible with Firefox, Safari and Chrome. If you want to make a browser switch, even if it is temporary, you can easily make the change with multiple web-browser options and use BlueSky as normal.

Hopefully this helps answer some of your questions and if you expect you have a security problem be sure to run a updated version of Security Software and seek the help of an IT professional.
